Had a scan over this race this morning.
15 of the 21 past winners had won current season.
5 who hadn't were 2nd in at least one of their runs
Only fly in ointment was Moscow Mist 66/1 who finished 4th as best placing and was fortunate that the second was carrying a 7lb penalty
That brings us onto penalties.
The only past winner with a penalty was Third Set (5lb) last year.
All the runners carrying 3lb penalties - 12 of them have failed to reach the frame except Missile (3yo) who was beaten by Moscow Mist.
Seven runners carried a 5 lb penalty producing a winner and 2nd.
Six carried a 7lb pen producing 2 places.
19 of the 21 finished in first 5 placings LTO. The exceptions were Lady Bear (5yo) and Fly to the stars (3yo)
15 had run over 8f LTO
4 over 7f
2 over 10f
Most were in B class races
Sandown LTO features 8 times
4 & 5yo's have best record winning 16 of the 21 races
Of the four 3yo winners - they either WLTO and or had 2 wins in current season.
The only older winner a 6yo was Unshakable who runs again this year but now a 9yo. No previous winner has won the race twice yet.
18 of 21 past winners were distance winners. the exceptions being Moscow Mist (again) Sky Cloud, both 5yo's and Lonsome Dude a 4yo Course winner.
Only 3 low draw numbers have won the larger majority shows a high draw favoured.
Only 2 favourites have won (both in last 4 years) whilst 10 paper 1st or 2nd favs have won.
This year none of the three 3yo's quite fit the previous stats.
Cape Hawk is only penalty carrier - which appears a negative on stats.
The two horse that tick most boxes are Military Cross and Gold Soverign and come here with a single win run this season. Only 1 past winner has come to this race with a single run - Fraam 2nd 1994 - and Gold Sovereign maybe too lightly raced for this race today. Raptor is a reasonable outsider, but all are drawn low.
It could involve the Sandown race runners who are all tightly matched - Fifteen Love, Masaalek and Dubai's Touch. They all have a high draw.
It's an imponderable race this year.
